Hardliners to the fore

The President thinks a coalition will strengthen him but his suspicion of Rwanda grows as fears of civil war increase

Instability is accelerating in the wake of Pierre Nkurunziza's election to a third term as President and his swearing in on 20 August. Two senior officers have been assassinated. Grenade attacks and other violence have claimed 100 lives and the number of refugees, mainly Tutsi, in neighbouring countries has reached over 200,000. Over 1,000 people have been detained.
