Term after term

A mass demonstration on 27 September against a third presidential term for President Denis Sassou-Nguesso is unlikely to translate into a Burkina Faso- style revolution, Brazzaville pundits say. Until the demo, the only problem Sassou faced in changing the 2002 constitution to abolish term-limits was how to sell it at home and abroad. There was never any doubt that come next July, he would be elected to another five years as President. Apart from a break in 1992-97, he has been in power since 1979, although that still makes him only Africa's fifth longest-serving head of state.
