Holy days

A row over public holidays is being exploited by politicians and religious leaders

A bitter religious controversy has erupted as Mozambique's newly assertive Muslims flex their political muscles. President Joachim Chissano appears to be trying to delay signing a bill, passed by the National Assembly in early May, which makes the two main Muslim Eid holy days public holidays. The bill, submitted by 56 of the 250 Assembly members (roughly half of them Muslim, and from both parties), was backed by Chissano's ruling Frente de Libertação de Moçambique but opposed by the Resistência Nacional Moçambicana.
