AU force eyes Burundi

The AU standby force's advocates want it to deploy, but financial, administrative and diplomatic hurdles abound

The African Union is making noises about deploying its long-awaited standby force to Burundi. Since it was formed in 2001, the mantra of the AU has been 'African solutions to African problems'. Overseen by the AU and eventually comprising 25,000 troops, the African Standby Force (ASF) is intended to become a central pillar of the bloc's ability to provide African-led solutions to crises. The AU may intervene in a member state in 'serious circumstances, such as genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity', runs Article 4(h) of its Constitutive Act.
