Shein's tarnished win

The ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi finally got the electoral victory it wanted in Zanzibar after widespread intimidation, ballot-stuffing and an opposition boycott in the 21 March re-run of last October's election. Early returns in the October poll suggested victory for Seif Shariff Hamad of the Civic United Front (CUF), who said he had won after receiving 53% of the votes. The electoral commission, however, amid much controversy and ructions even among its own members, then annulled the elections on grounds of impropriety, which nobody outside the CCM found convincing.
