A charter for trouble

Battle is looming between the government and mining companies over plans for more black empowerment

Mining firms already struggling with low international commodity prices and rising labour costs are up in arms about the draft revised Mining Charter which the government issued for comment on 15 April. The Minister of Mineral Resources, Mosebenzi Zwane, was due to meet mining companies this week to discuss it. The companies claim they were not consulted before the draft was published, and a backlash from industry and opposition parties has followed.
