Big win for Vaz

In what most opponents of Guinea-Bissau's corrupt elite view as a serious blow, the Supreme Court ruled on 14 July that the appointment of Baciro Djá as Prime Minister by President José Mário Vaz was lawful. The appointment, regarded as a 'presidential coup', was part of an attempt to thwart the reformist programme of the progressive wing of the Partido Africano da Independência da Guiné e Cabo Verde (PAIGC) under dismissed Prime Minister Carlos Correia . The ruling reverses a previous court decision that declared illegal Vaz's previous appointment of Djá in August last year.
