The scramble for the spoils

Western policy looks confused and contradictory, while the UN stands accused of giving in to blackmail 

The political process set up by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has buckled under the weight of the country's multiple divisions, leaving Western governments confused and at odds. The death of three French Special Forces soldiers in a helicopter crash in Benghazi on 20 July has drawn attention to Paris's support for General Khalifa Haftar's Benghazi-based Libya National Army (LNA). Meanwhile, British and Italian Special Forces are embedded with Misurata militias attacking 'Islamic State' (Da'ish) in Sirte. Yet these militias are at odds with Haftar and they could easily clash over the control of oil resources.
