Safe choice, vexed process

After three political attempts to undermine the selection process, the Judicial Service Commission has named a new Chief Justice

An uncontroversial Appeals Court Judge of 64 from Kisii, David Kenani Maraga, has been named as the new Chief Justice. After two weeks of open interviews and three failed political attempts to undermine the selection process, he was nominated on 22 September by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). Maraga's experience as a High Court and Appeal Court judge and in private practice, his untainted past, collegiality, combined with his gusii ethnicity (one of Kenya's smallest groups) and the fact that he will be able to serve only one term until retiring by 70 before the 2022 elections all helped to propel him to the top.
