Concealing disappointment

Progress towards peace has slowed sharply in the past year. Donors are being optimistic in the hope their fears won't be realised

Since September 2016, the number of internally displaced persons has increased by more than 100,000, while more than 2.2 million people need food aid for daily survival. Security has steadily deteriorated in the east and north-west, especially in the regions of Bambari, Bria, Bakouma, Kaga Bandoro and Ngaoundaye. The only relatively stable area is the capital, Bangui, although street gangs are spreading. This is not the positive gloss international bodies are promoting.
