…A harsher one in Mogadishu

The future that the world laid out in London is already hitting obstacles in the Somali capital

Many Somalis believe that whatever aid funds donors pledge during and after the London Somalia Conference on 11 May, first in the queue to receive them will be the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom), the United Nations and other international agencies. If not them, then a government not only bloated by patronage but with a poor record of accountability. One expected beneficiary of the funds became the subject of embarrassing news a few days after the single-day conference closed. The fine words in London about renewing the Somali National Army contrasted with the occupation of the Defence Ministry in Mogadishu, just a few days later, by angry SNA soldiers who had not been paid for months.
