A test of wills over mining

President Magufuli is accusing Acacia Mining  of under-reporting production. Its mines could close if the row isn't settled

In Africa's latest resource nationalism row, London-based Acacia Mining says it may halt operations at the Bulyanhulu Gold Mine if it can't reach a deal with Tanzania's government. The dispute centres on the processing of concentrates. President John Pombe Magufuli's government has banned export of the materials since 3 March because he believes Acacia, majority-owned by Canada's Barrick Gold, has been concealing the value of its exports. However, the Tanzania Minerals Audit Agency (TMAA) has been inspecting the consignments for many years and had made no complaint.
