Obiang foils coup

The details of an attempted coup against President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo over the Christmas period remain unclear amid contradictory reports from government and other sources. On 24 December, security forces began to round up foreigners from neighbouring countries in Bata and other towns. Three days later, officials said mercenaries had been intercepted trying to cross the border from Cameroon. The Interior Ministry now says more than 30 mercenaries from Cameroon, Chad and Central African Republic have been arrested, but that dozens more remain at large. Mahamat Kodo Bani, former commander of the presidential guard in Chad, is reported to have been arrested at the border, armed and carrying money.
