New twist

The 25 August raid by South Africa's 'Scorpion' police squad on the Cape Town house of Mark Thatcher, son of British ex-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, follows a private meeting last week with officials in Pretoria about his alleged involvement in a plot to overthrow President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo's regime in Equatorial Guinea. Africa Confidential understands that Thatcher discussed his links to a South African-registered company, Triple A Aviation, and former military officer Crause Steyl, whose brother Neil Steyl has been detained in Zimbabwe since March on suspicion of involvement in the plot.
