Corruption inquiry takes off

The new president is taking the advice of his transition team's explosive report by instituting a judicial inquiry into corruption

President Julius Maada Bio's cabinet on 6 July approved a wide-ranging probe focusing on 'unexplained wealth' allegedly accumulated by former President Ernest Bai Koroma and his officials. It came two days after the release of a damning transition report that accused the officials of plundering the state. The inquiry will be headed by a senior Nigerian judge, whose consent was secured the day the report came out through the good offices of the Nigerian High Commission in Freetown. The judge – still unnamed as Africa Confidential went to press – will seek to recover plundered state assets, resources and cash through plea bargaining, which Bio's government would prefer, or criminal prosecution, as urged by civil society activists.
