South Sudan

A seven-year hitch

June's surprise Khartoum Declaration of Agreement, which saw both government and rebels recommit to a cessation of hostilities and work towards power-sharing was just enough to postpone planned sanctions on South Sudanese leaders at the African Union summit in Mauritania. It also allowed Sudan's President Omer Hassan el Beshir to present himself as a regional peacemaker. Yet the measures required to put South Sudan's moribund peace process back on track seemed as complex as ever as the troubled nation's seventh anniversary of independence came and went on 9 July.
