Jealous of presidential candidate Nabil Karoui's popularity, the political class manoeuvred to have him arrested

Tunisians go to the polls on 15 September to choose a new president and, three weeks later, a new parliament. The contests lacked strong drama until 23 August, when front-runner Nabil Karoui, founder of the Nessma TV station, was arrested on corruption charges. They are nonetheless vital tests of the strength of the only democracy in the Middle East and North Africa to survive the political earthquakes caused by the Arab Spring. But Karoui's arrest throws that reputation into doubt.
