Years of restrictions and violence against the opposition makes President Magufuli a shoo-in for re-election in October

Tanzania is set for six weeks of phoney election campaigning before, as is widely expected, President John Pombe Magufuli secures a second five-year term on 28 October at the general election. A faltering economy, particularly in the administration's first three years, oppressive measures against media and civil society, and restrictions on individual freedoms might in other circumstances have created an opening for a broad opposition to unite against the governing Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM). That has not happened.
