Dead men's shoes

The election to replace the dead dictator, General Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara, is due on 17 October, organised by the man whose soldiers killed him. Major Daouda Malam Wanké, now head of the ruling junta, commanded the Presidential Guard, from whom came the assassins at Niamey airport on 9 April (AC Vol 40 No 8). Wanké has promised what is the first presidential poll since he backed Maïnassara's coup against Mahamane Ousmane in 1996.
