Victory by proxy

Former Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada may be in self-imposed exile in Portugal but his political influence is undimmed. Carlos Vila Nova, the Acção Democrática Independente (ADI) candidate and political scion of ADI leader Trovoada, is well ahead after the first round of the presidential elections. Insiders think Vila Nova is poised to become São Tomé's next president. Proximity to the Trovoada family seems to have helped. Apart from Patrice's stint as head of government, his father Miguel was President.
