Mali rejects human rights mandate

Bamako isolates itself further by restricting UN peacekeeping operations while giving free rein to Wagner group

After several months of provoking and prolonging disputes with numerous partners, Mali's transitional government has found a new entity to pick a fight with – the United Nations Security Council. As the Council renewed the mandate of the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali, the Mission multidimensionnelle intégrée des Nations unies pour la stabilisation au Mali (Minusma), for another year on 29 June, Mali's ambassador to the UN read out a statement expressing his government's 'firm opposition to Minusma's freedom of movement in the execution of its human rights mandate'.
