Abiy tries to exploit Orthodox schism

Many Copts see the government's hand in the split of Oromo priests from the mainstream Church. But the Church’s Amhara leaders are fighting back

A religious division that threatened to deepen the ethno-nationalist conflicts already threatening the federation began in January and has been waxing and waning, with more arrests and protests this month. At the beginning of the year and with the backing of some in Oromia’s political and security establishment, dissident Oromo clerics in the Amhara-dominated Orthodox church, the oldest institution in the country, declared their independence.
