Weah and Boakai brace for second round

Worsening economic conditions and corruption swung votes behind the opposition candidates

A close second round run-off looks almost certain after Liberia's presidential elections failed to deliver a decisive conclusion in the first round of voting on 10 October. With 92.82% of votes counted, opposition leader Joseph Nyumah Boakai had a narrow 800-vote lead over President George Weah, giving him a 43.7% of the vote to Weah's 43.65%. The 2.5 million registered voters were also electing a new House of Representatives and half the Senate.
