In the second round of the presidential elections due on 17 or 24 July, Malam Bacai Sanha of the ruling Partido Africano da Independência de Guiné e Cabo Verde (PAIGC), who won the first round of voting on 19 June with 158,000 votes, is set to battle independent candidate and ex-army General João Bernardo 'Nino' Vieira, who won 129,000.
