Abiy bans Tigray party, risking new war

After a devastating two-year war with Addis Ababa, the TPLF faces bureaucratic extinction

When the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) deregistered the Tigray People’s Liberation Front on 14 May, it raised fears of a new war in northern Ethiopia. This bureaucratic move could turn into a political flashpoint. Dissolving the TPLF, the dominant political force in northern Ethiopia from 1991-2018, by legal fiat is a high-risk tactic by the federal government under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
