Vanishing votes

The fate of the national elections and who's running in them is shrouded in mystery. They were meant to be held in 2006 but no date has been confirmed by President José Eduardo dos Santos. Moreover, he had pledged not to stand in the elections following the signing of a peace accord between the ruling Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola and the União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola. He has reneged on that promise and his apparatchiks have been energetically suppressing any signs of an alternative presidential candidate for the MPLA. The last pretender, former MPLA Secretary General João Lourenço, was swiftly sidelined by Dos Santos.
