Explosive results

Nobody has won the 30 July presidential elections in results announced on 20 August. Instead there will be a run-off between Joseph Kabila (45 per cent) and Jean-Pierre Bemba (20 per cent) on 29 October. Hours before the official announcement it was clear neither had got the 50 per cent necessary to win outright, and disgruntled loyalists on both sides pre-empted the results with gunfire which continued sporadically for three days in Kinshasa.
