The men from the south

Bayelsa State's head of security, Bola Igali, barked orders into his mobile phone. 'We have a security situation developing,' he told Africa Confidential, breaking off the interview. Shooting in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, had just broken out on 20 April, the eve of the presidential and National Assembly elections. Nine speedboats had landed at Yenagoa's waterfront laden with well armed militants. Down the road, a massive billboard read: 'Wicked politicians! Your politics with my blood - not this time around'.
