Al Shabaab targets Eritrea

Al Shabaab, Somalia's main Islamist insurgent movement, has a new country in its sights. Its Spokesperson, Suldan Mohammed Aala Mohammed, has announced the addition of Eritrea to the usual suspects, Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Ghana, South Africa, Uganda, the United States, Burundi and, of course, Israel. This is surprising as Eritrea, while denying it, has been supporting both Al Shabaab and its equally Islamist Somali ally, Hizbul Islam, some of whose senior officers have been training in Eritrean camps. These officers are said to be close to Hizbul Islam's leader, Sheikh Hassan Dahir 'Aweys', who returned to Somalia this year after a long stay in Asmara.
