Ambushing the revolution

Oppositionists want sweeping constitutional change; the military wants quick fixes to the old constitution, then fresh elections

Political tension is rising again over the military’s plans to hold constitutional and presidential elections within six months, a move which would benefit mainly the formerly ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) and its old foe, the Muslim Brotherhood (MB). Oppositionists in the Wafd Party, Tagammu, April 6 Youth Movement and the Coalition of the Youth of the 25 January Revolution have condemned the hasty organisation of the referendum and want a ‘no’ vote. Al Ghad leader Ayman Nour has confirmed to Africa Confidential his opposition to the constitutional amendments. He also said he might try to make an alliance with Al Wafd and any liberal group in the next elections. Mohamed Mustafa el Baradei also opposes the amendments and wants more time to draw up a new constitution.
