Bozizé slows down his takeover

After rigging the January elections and colonising the state apparatus with his relatives and members of a Gbaya elite, President François Bozizé Yangouvonda is applying the brakes after creditors, belatedly, made their concern felt. He is also reacting to the concern of Chadian President Idris Déby Itno and has started to disband the militias in the north. By all independent accounts, the elections were even more corrupt than those of March 2005, in spite of international financial support and a monitoring exercise led by the United Nations’ Bureau intégré des nations unies pour la consolidation de la paix en Centrafrique (Binuca; AC Vol 52 No 5).
