Opposition picks its champions

Isaías Samakuva looks certain to be re-elected head of UNITA while the other parties prepare for the polls

The leadership contest for the União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola is widely seen as an empty affair since the ambitious Abel Chivukuvuku decided not to stand. Chivukuvuku is a savvier politician but he may be moving to pastures new (AC Vol 51 No 1). A former intelligence officer, Estevão José Pedro Kachiungo, is challenging Isaías Samakuva but he is so little known that he has been labelled a dummy candidate. UNITA is still licking its wounds after haemorrhaging 54 seats in Angola's 2008 elections.
