The United Nations Mission in Liberia should serve another year, according to its latest progress report. It is cautiously optimistic in general but is more forthcoming in describing its frustration with the government’s performance. After more than a decade of service, the cost of even a scaled-down mission comes close to US$500 million a year. The UN anticipates deploying 3,750 troops in July 2015, down from just under 8,000 last month. UNMIL remains wary of generating hostile reaction to its eventual withdrawal, emphasising a gradual ‘drawdown’.
