New York showdown

Joseph Kabila and Paul Kagame take their battles over the Kivu provinces to the UN General Assembly

Congolese ministers have been energetically lobbying in New York ahead of a high-level meeting on Central Africa at the United Nations General Assembly which opens on 25 September. Kinshasa wants the UN Security Council to sanction Rwanda’s Defence Minister, James Kabarebe, Chief of Defence Staff, Charles Kayonga, and General Jack Nziza for their support for the rebels of the Mouvement du 23 mars in North Kivu Province. The bulk of M23 fighters come from the Tutsi-led Congrès national pour la défense du peuple.
