The 12 March deal between Juba and Khartoum now looks as if will restore South Sudan’s major source of government income – oil

The Juba government ‘has given the order to resume oil production and companies are now making preparations to do so,’ a source close to the negotiations with Sudan told Africa Confidential. In January 2012, Juba shut down its production, arguing that Khartoum was ‘stealing’ oil and money. It was charging South Sudan astronomical transit fees to export its oil via Port Sudan on the Red Sea and accounting was opaque. After holding up agreement, Khartoum has now quietly caved in.
