Déby must win back the donors' confidence - the people's
confidence is another matter
President Idriss Déby sailed through the presidential election in the first round amid loud questions about electoral fraud. Many Chadians are challenging the results. While France and the Francophone observers accepted the outcome of the 22 May poll, the World Bank, crucial partner in the country's petroleum project, was less willing to dismiss election irregularities. These included widespread intimidation of electors and the shifting of some polling stations to the houses of barons of the ruling Mouvement Patriotique du Salut. Voting cards were still being liberally handed out to MPS supporters, even foreign ones, on polling day.
