Spontaneous street protests against price rises quickly escalated into calls for the overthrow of the regime
The sight of one of the regime’s stalwarts, Nafi’e Ali Nafi’e, being driven out of the wake for a protestor killed by security officers on 27 September summed up the mood of what Sudanese are calling the ‘September Uprising’. A widely circulated video clip shows mourners at the home of Salah Mudathir el Sanhouri, a pharmacist from Burri, Khartoum, shouting ‘Out! Out!’ as they forced out the Presidential Assistant and former security chief, who had perhaps assumed that traditional Sudanese funeral courtesies still applied amidst the political crisis.
