Troubled polls favour Condé

The general elections look to have saved the President’s skin by providing no overall winner but the opposition is crying foul

Guinea’s long-awaited and long-delayed elections may well have produced a National Assembly with no party in control. That means disappointment for the opposition and deep relief for President Alpha Condé. Final results were still to come as we went to press but the overall picture is unlikely to change. The opposition has refused to accept the results, as have some government supporters (AC Vol 54 No 14, Dodgy dialogue). Election observers noted irregularities and, on 15 October, the Commission éléctorale nationale indépendante (CENI, the electoral commission) announced a recount for Matoto in Conakry, the biggest constituency in the country.
