Ethiopia

No runner for office

The governing Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front played it safe by electing Mulatu Teshome Wirtu to the largely ceremonial office of President on 7 October. Mulatu, who once sat on the EPRDF Executive Committee, was until recently Ambassador to Turkey and, earlier, China and Japan. He holds a doctorate in international law from Beijing University. The unanimous vote in Parliament even included Girma Seifu, the sole opposition representative (AC Vol 51 No 16, Opposition nuptials).
