Abductions fuel anxiety

Police officers and their accomplices may be behind the current wave of kidnapping, private sector security sources have told Africa Confidential. The abductions are fuelling public anxiety over the resurgence of violence between the state and the opposition Resistência Nacional Moçambicana. This is likely to affect the local elections: campaigning began last week. About 30,000 people took to the streets of the capital on 31 October to protest against insecurity.
