Another dam under fire

The Gibe III dam on the Omo River may threaten Lake Turkana and those who depend on it

A new report claims that Ethiopia’s Gibe III dam on the Omo river could lower water levels in Lake Turkana, in Kenya’s remote and arid northwest, by as much as 20 metres. ‘What Future for Lake Turkana?’, issued by the African Studies Centre of the University of Oxford on 5 December, claims the environmental and human impact of the dam could be catastrophic. The Ethiopian government insists the project is of enormous economic benefit and points out that the Kenyan government has no objections.
