The General's transition

As Sani Abacha makes his political plans there is growing disquiet in the military

No one who has visited the Presidential complex at Aso Rock in recent weeks doubts that General Sani Abacha, encouraged by his wife Maryam and his 'kitchen cabinet', intends to stand for the Presidency in next year's elections. Although the bandwagon has been rolling for several months, his officials will neither confirm nor deny these plans. Instead, callers are urged to wait until 17 November when Gen. Abacha is to broadcast to the nation, marking, among other things, four years since he seized power from the ailing interim government led by Ernest Shonekan.
