King to move

The opposition to King Mswati’s traditional government is split – and losing hope

The trades union movement has tried and failed to bring down the government of King Mswati III. Jan Sithole, Secretary General of the Swaziland Federation of Trade Unions, called a general strike of his 80,000 members on 13 October. After two days, it petered out with no result. Sithole's attempt to use the Federation for an openly political purpose has lost him his two closest colleagues, his partners for a month in gaol after a first abortive strike in February. They are Themba Msibi, the SFTU's Vice-Chairman, and Jabulani Nxumalo, its Assistant Secretary General.
