Bid for Sahara rights

Two former United Nations officials are lobbying for human rights monitoring to be added to the Mission des nations unies pour le référendum dans le Sahara Occidental (Minurso) mandate. In a letter to French President François Hollande, the former Deputy Chairman of Minurso, Frank Ruddy, and former personal envoy to Western Sahara for Secretary General Kofi Anan, Peter Van Walsum, called for what they describe as vital action to defuse tensions in the territory, which was occupied by Morocco in 1975.
