Oily bumps in the road

Arguments over the gas project, an offshore spill and an uncertain legal framework show that the way to the oil and gas bonanza is not easy

Mozambique’s nascent oil and gas industry has suffered its first significant spill. It highlights one of the difficulties in developing one of the world’s largest gas deposits. This is not an environmental disaster – the amount spilled is roughly equivalent to the contents of a large road-tanker – but it comes at a difficult time. Tension is rising over the environmental and social impact of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project and relations between government and industry are strained over contracts and regulations.
