Politicians as targets

The latest round of murderous attacks contradicts President Hassan’s claims to have stabilised the country

The murder of the popular singer and member of Parliament Saado Ali Warsame on 23 July and of MP and former minister Aden Madeer on 1 August was a sharp reminder of the continuing lack of security in Somalia. The Islamist militia Al Haraka al Shabaab al Mujahideen claimed responsibility for both assassinations. Being a politician in Somalia is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. This year alone, five legislators have been assassinated. That number would have been much higher if the Shabaab team tasked with attacking the Parliament building on 24 May had headed to the floor where MPs were meeting, rather than going upstairs.
