Sudan

The oil front

Sudan's National Islamic Front government (AC Vol 37 No 25) faces a military onslaught by opposition forces in Blue Nile province but Arakis is still negotiating to bring China and Malaysia into its nearby oil venture. An interim agreement in December gave the state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation 40 per cent, Malaysia's state-owned Petronas 30 per cent, Arakis 25 per cent and the Sudan National Petroleum Company 5 per cent in a joint operating company due to be finalised by mid-1997.
