Outside agents

Prime Minister Kengo wa Dondo's claims of military successes in the Forces Armées Zaïroises' 'massive counter-offensive' against rebels in Kivu Province seem overblown. Less than a week after Kengo ordered a counter offensive (which some supporters of ailing President Mobutu Sese Seko said he had no right to do) the FAZ initial thrust was petering out, scuppered by its inability to establish a ground corridor or resupply its troops by air. Military sources say that Laurent-Désiré Kabila's Alliance des Forces Démocratiques pour la Libération du Congo-Zaïre (AFDL) have maintained their positions about 300 kilometres east of Kisangani. Much of the early fighting between the AFDL and FAZ was for the area around Walikale, some 150 km. west of Goma, but no independent sources have verified the FAZ claim to have recaptured the town.
