Across the lake

Burundian rebels may have lost part of their Zaïrean safe-haven but they fight on and have even acquired a navy. On 25 March, the Hutu hardline Forces pour la Défense de la Démocratie captured a cargo boat on Lake Tanganyika. Ex-Interior Minister Léonard Nyangoma's FDD took the Rwegera, belonging to the Burundi-based, Greek-owned firm Batralac, to Moba, Zaïre. This showed the Zaïrean war has not deprived the FDD of their fighting ability; and contrary to their claims, Laurent Kabila's rebels hadn't yet taken Moba, which seemed still to be in the hands of the Forces Armées Zaïroises on 9 April.
