Massacres in the mist

As June's presidential election approaches, the political atmosphere is deteriorating and political violence is on the increase

President Pierre Nkurunziza has yet to declare whether he will stand for another term in the 26 June presidential election. Increasing signs that he will stand include the growing repression of the opposition and violence by the armed forces. Nkurunziza failed to change the constitution last March to permit himself a third presidential term but some of his supporters argue that since he was first elected in 2005-10 only by Parliament instead of by universal suffrage, according to the Arusha Peace Agreement he would be within the law if he stood again (AC Vol 55 No 8).
